Over the past several weeks I have heard from various individuals, “2011 is the year I am going to get organized!” The question I immediately ask is, “Why now? Why 2011?” Most everyone who made that statement replied with the standard answer: “Because I make a New Year’s Resolution every year to get more organized and I just can’t take it anymore!”
The fact that so many people make a New Year’s Resolution to get organized, but few see their goal become a reality is because something HUGE is standing in the way. Some would argue it is discipline. Others would say it is the busyness of life. As a professional organizer, I believe the true roadblock that derails even the best of intentions is none other than FEAR. Most people I talk to want to get organized, but are paralyzed by fear .
Paralyzing Organizing Fears:
- Everything will need to be labeled and color-coded in order to be considered organized. FALSE FEAR. Most professional organizers know that one-size-fits-all systems do not work. True organization is about creating a system that addresses the needs and personality of each individual, home and/or business.
- You have to get rid of things of value or throw everything away. FALSE FEAR. Getting organized is about sifting through things that no longer serve you and making room for things that are truly important to you. True organization is about creating a system that protects your treasures/valuables and allows you to enjoy them.
- Getting organized will cost too much time or money. FALSE FEAR. Most of my organizing clients comment that they are sorry that they didn’t spend the time or the money to get organized sooner. Most clients have also stated that being organized saves them money and time on a daily basis. Most professional organizers offer numerous organizing solutions for clients within all budgets and lifestyle schedules. Stop believing that organization has to be all or nothing. True organization needs to be seen as an investment that will allow you to have the life or business you deserve. Invest a little time and money here and there. Spending the time or money to organize one filing drawer at a time is better than nothing.
- Organizing has to be perfect. FALSE FEAR. Perfection is impossible. Being an organized individual or business does not mean creating a system of perfection. So often we quit before we start because we know that the “perfect system” we envision is impossible. We set ourselves up for failure. True organization is about FREEDOM. True organization is about operating more efficiently, using your time more effectively and being able to locate things when you need them. Now doesn’t that feel freeing?
As you venture into 2011 don’t let FEAR stop you in your tracks in your pursuit to get organized. What action steps will you take TODAY to make sure your resolution will become a reality in 2011?
